For nearly two decades, the Altoona Area High School boys have been the gold standard at the District 6 Class AAA track and field championship meet.
This year, though, the Mountain Lions are probably going to be pushed as they hope to hold onto their district crown.
Both Altoona and State College have six No. 1 seeds for Thursday's meet at Mansion Park. The district released its seedings on Monday night. The meet kicks off at 3:30 p.m.
The winner in each event advances to the PIAA meet at Shippensburg University May 25-26, along with any performers meeting a predetermined qualifying standard.
Altoona's strength on the boys side resides more firmly in the distance runs and the relays. Seniors Korey Replogle and Dylan Mountain are ranked a very close one-two in both the 1600 and the 3200 meters and form half of the Lions' top-seeded four-by-800 relay. Altoona also is top seeded in the 400 relay.
Altoona senior pole vaulter Ryan Steinbugl not only is a prohibitive favorite, he is chasing a possible 6-AAA record. Steinbugl vaulted 15 feet, 10 inches early this season. If he can match or exceed it, he'll break the mark of 15-9 set by State College's Kevin Dare in 2000.
Dreux Stamford is Altoona's remaining first seed, holding down the top position in the 200 meters; Stamford also is seeded second in the 200.
The Altoona girls hopes rest with Nikki Kerns, Katelyn Goodman and Abby Wagner. Kerns is the No. 1 seed in both hurdles and the high jump, Goodman is seeded first in the discus and javelin, and Wagner is the top seed in the long jump and second seed in the triple jump.
