Cyclist lived each day to the fullest

June 3, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

Our community recently lost a great person in the form of Mark Sherlock, whose obituary appeared in the Mirror on May 22.

Mark was a quiet person, but he managed to influence everyone with whom he came into contact for the better.

His teammates on Blair Area Multisport have been sharing memories of the encouragement and camaraderie he gave them during long workouts and races.

Mark was also a familiar figure during the YMCA's annual half marathon, where he would ride his bike back and forth on the course, providing assistance to the runners and race marshals.

Mark was kind to everyone and led by example.

He volunteered his time in ways that enhanced the experience others had in their athletic endeavors.

His belief in the potential of others to do great things moved many of us to do things that we would not have done on our own and inspired us to give our best effort every day.

Although we lost him too soon, we are lucky because he told us during his life how he wanted us to honor him.

He signed every single email he sent with a simple closing "Enjoy Life."

It was a pure wish, full of hope. No matter what the subject of the email, his closing brought you a message of peace and positivity and a reminder to take time to savor your experiences.

It is a universal message upon which I hope all readers of the Mirror will reflect. Enjoy Life.
