Maria Snyder spent this spring running away from other distance runners, so it was no surprise that the Northern Bedford County High School junior was a runaway winner of the girls most valuable performer honors on the Inter-County Conference track and field all-star team, which was announced recently.
The all-stars are selected solely on the number of points they scored. Snyder was the top point producer in three individual events and was a member of the 3200-meter relay all-star quartet.
Junior Seth Worthing of Bellwood-Antis shared boys MVP with Southern Fulton's Jacob Ashkettle and fronted a large group of Bellwood all-stars on the boys side.
Snyder produced the most points in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs. Leah Hershberger, Snyder's Northern Bedford teammate, was an all-star in the 400 and triple jump and shared honors with Everett's Baylee Beegle in the long jump - Hershberger was the runner-up for girls MVP, scoring 218 points to Snyder's 240.
Everett's Keira Bair (pole vault), Tussey Mountain's Carlee Bussard (discus) and Allyson Gearhart (300 hurdles) were other all-stars from the Mirror coverage area, along with Bellwood's 400 and 1600 relays. In addition, Juniata Valley's Lydia Jenkins tied for most points in the 100 relay.
Mount Union's Alana Saulen was the winner in the 100 and 200 dashes.
On the boys side, Worthing scored the most in the 100 and 200 and was part of the 400 and 1600 relays. He and Ashkettle both finished with 195 points.
Bellwood's boys had two other individuals named all-stars in two events: Jeremy Claypoole in the long and triple jumps and Zach Sinisi in both hurdles. Blue Devil two-miler Kyle Bartlett also made the team.
Northern Bedford high jumper Zach Pressel was the only other area performer to get all-star recognition individually. McConnellsburg's Ryan Stoeckle was a first-teamer in two throwing events.
