Lions get verbal from the South

June 5, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

From Mirror, wire reports

The Penn State football team has been making recruiting inroads in long untapped territory like Florida, California and Texas this spring, and it paid off on Sunday at a position of need.

Defensive back Neiko Robinson of Northview High School in Bratt, Fla. reportedly has made a verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Robinson just received a scholarship offer from Penn State last week and becomes the ninth member of its 2013 recruiting class and the second recruit for the secondary, perhaps the area where the Lions most need to retool.

He is Penn State's first recruit from Florida in 12 years.

Robinson, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds, had 93 tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery last season at rural Flomaton High in Alabama. He scored four touchdowns in a second round state playoff win.

Robinson, who probably will wind up at safety, had scholarship offers from Alabama-Birmingham and North Texas State but was beginning to receive some recruiting interest from major BCS colleges.
