Letters to the editor

June 17, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

With all of the professional and college sports that floods the news wires each day, much of it negative, I'd like to thank the Mirror for devoting prime space each Monday to thorough coverage of our local youth baseball leagues.

Some of the recent sports-related coverage unrelated to these local sports leagues has been very difficult to digest, particularly recently. But the inclusion of the positive work of our young athletes is a welcome break that I particularly enjoy.

I know that the hard-working kids who play for local teams enjoy seeing their performances in the paper each week, win or lose.

The occasional local athlete profiles that occur year round are also a welcome sight.

The action-based photos of friends and rivals during games further help our young local athletes to feel good about their hard work, and hopefully this will offset some of the highly negative things that seem to make their way into the newspaper more often than I would like.

I hope that the same kind of positive coverage of the young athletes in our community will continue to unfold in the months ahead.

Twyman story inspiring

I read a great book about Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes when I was around 7 years old, and the memories came flooding back to me when I heard of Mr. Twyman's recent death and Pat Farabaugh's tribute to him in the Mirror.

I look forward to reading Farabaugh's book and was wondering if there is some charity set up for Twyman. I would love to make a donation to honor just what a great man he was.
