Firefighters fix flag

July 2, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

I was really shocked that within hours after the June 24 Mirror came out, a flag was once again atop the flagpole in Garden Heights.

I missed the whole thing. My dog and I were asleep in far side of house. Capt. Joseph A. Eberhardt of the Altoona Fire Department Station 340, after reading a letter in the Mirror, decided this was something that had to be fixed.

Firefighters grabbed a rope and were off to my house where I was sound asleep. After talking to my neighbors, they went to the monument and replaced the rope and put up an older flag. They said when it was time to put up my flag, just call and they would be back.

I just got back from putting up the flag with the help of Carl Enmom, who takes care of the monument and the area. He is also a veteran. Enmom called everyone trying to get this solved.

If you get a chance, take a drive by and look. If you see a firefighter, policeman or policewoman or AMED member, just say thank you. Take time and walk up to a veteran, shake his hand and say thank you.

Without veterans, I would not be able to write this letter.
