Barry A. Houser

Barry A. Houser, 66, of Altoona passed away unexpectedly Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John W. and Mary M. (Haines) Houser.

He is survived by two sons: Aaron Houser of Altoona and Adam Houser of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a daughter, Rebecca Sue Reed of Worthington, Pa.; a grandson, Kaden Imler; a brother, Ronald Houser of Columbus, Ohio; and his former spouse, Marcia Graham of Altoona.

Barry was a member of the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren.

He retired as a Trooper from Pennsylvania State Police, Troop G, Hollidaysburg in 2000 after 27 years of service.

He was a 1964 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in criminal justice. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.

Barry was an avid stamp and coin collector; enjoyed family genealogy; was a movie enthusiast; a former wedding and portrait photographer; was proficient in sign language; was a lifelong blood donor to the American Red Cross and longtime contributor to many charitable organizations.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Rebecca Miller Zeek. Interment with military honors will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the American Red Cross in person at the visitation or through the mail in memory of Barry.
