Logan Valley Mall is in the midst of a retail makeover.
The former Gordon's Jewelers store is being converted into a Zales Jewelers store, mall spokeswoman Joy Weidel said.
Renovation work began Monday, and the store hopes to reopen as Zales by Saturday, Weidel said.
Both Gordon's and Zales are owned by Dallas, Texas-based Zale Corp., which operates about 1,790 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
Zales and Gordon's are similar stores, but Zales is a more familiar name, Zale Corp. spokeswoman Roxanne Barry said. Zales has 639 stores while there are 157 Gordon's locations.
"They carry some of the same products. Zales gets more national advertising, and we have more of them. Zales is in all 50 states and Puerto Rico while Gordon's is in 27 states and Puerto Rico," Barry said.
Maurices, a women's clothing retailer is set to open later this summer. Also, Applebee's recently underwent a major remodeling; Shoe Dept. will expand and become Shoe Dept. Encore; and Nail Square recently expanded as well.
Maurices will open in a 6,155-square-foot location on the second level across from American Eagle in late July. The store features tops, bottoms, jeans, dresses, shoes, handbags and plus-sized apparel.
Applebee's now features a contemporary design with stronger community decor specific to Altoona.
Shoe Dept. will expand its store by more than 10,000 square feet by the end of summer and become Shoe Dept. Encore, offering a wide variety of fall boots, sneakers, ballet flats and more.
Nail Square also recently expanded its location on the second level near J.C. Penney from 764 square feet to 1,127 square feet. The nail salon offers polished manicures and pedicures.
There are also several store relocations at Logan Valley Mall:
Nature's Habitat has moved to the second level across from JB Robinson Jewelers; Radio Shack is now open on the second level across from Old Navy; Rue21 is across from the Food Court; Strawberry is set to open on the first level near Hollister and Buckle; and Things Remembered will open on the first level next to EB Games.
