Covering the bases

July 26, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: Former Curve OF Starling Marte was called up to the majors by the Pirates on Wednesday. The 23-year-old Marte, who hit .332 for the Curve last season, is the 95th former Curve player to make it to the majors.

SAFE AT FIRST: With RHP Gerrit Cole throwing for the Curve on Wednesday, the Pirates other highly-touted pitching prospect - Jameson Taillon - was also in action. In six innings for High-A Bradenton, Taillon gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out six against St. Lucie.

STEALING SECOND: The Curve were involved in some transactions Wednesday. RHP Logan Kensing was called up to Triple-A Indianapolis and LHP Jhonathan Ramos was promoted to Altoona from Bradenton.

ROUNDING THIRD: Both Kensing and Ramos pitched Wednesday. Kensing threw two scoreless innings against Pawtucket, while Ramos did not allow a run or a hit in one inning against Reading.

HEADING HOME: The Curve return home to face New Hampshire tonight. Denny McLain, a two time Cy Young Award winner and the last pitcher to win 30 games in a major league season, will be on hand at Peoples Natural Gas Field to sign autographs and meet fans.
