15th annual event will benefit Cancer Society, Icing Smiles
BEDFORD Cove Party Supply of Roaring Spring, in conjunction with the Quality Inn of Bedford, will sponsor the 15th annual Cove Country Cake Show on Aug. 18 and 19 at the Quality Inn, 4407 Business Route 220 North. This year's theme is "Leather and Lace.''
They have teamed up with the American Cancer Society and Icing Smiles, and all proceeds from this event will go to the American Cancer Society.
The entrants may donate their entries to Icing Smiles. Founder Tracy Quisenberry will make sure the cakes are given to critically ill children to help bring a smile to their faces.
This event is open to all sugar enthusiasts. There is a divisional competition, open to all who wish to enter, a live 3 1/2-hour cake challenge (like on Food Network), a live mini challenge and a live children's challenge, as well as live demonstrations on sugar art-related techniques.
There will be multiple classes from well-loved instructors from all over the country and many well-known judges and entrants, many of whom are traveling across the country to join in on the fun and to help us complete the mission of helping those who are suffering from this horrible disease.
All registrants must be preregistered for classes by Aug. 9. Registration forms and class details are available at www.covecountrycakeshow.com.
They include:
n Awesome Alstromeria will be taught by Jennifer Dontz of Sugar Delites, Michigan. The class fee is $105. It will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 18. n Realistic Wood Graining Effects with Diane Shavkin of New York. This is good for centerpieces and to also to be done as the cake using fondant instead of gum paste. The class fee is $115. It will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 19.
n Orchid Mania with Beth Parvu of sugarpaste.com. Learn from a pro the coloring techniques to make your orchids come to life. The class fee is $120. It will be held from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18.
n Lace Painting and Feathers with Betty Van Norstrand, a renowned sugar artist from Hyde Park, N.Y., who has traveled extensively teaching a wide variety of techniques for many years. She has taught many high profile sugar artists over the years. A supply list will be available for download as the information becomes available. The class fee is $115. It wil be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17.
There will be multiple tours of the area, one of which is a free walking tour of historic downtown Bedford. Other tours include Gravity Hill, the Flight 93 Memorial, Quecreek Mine, Fort Bedford, Old Bedford Village and The Layette Museum.

General admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and free for children ages 5 and younger.
