The Altoona Mirror

Penn State senior linebacker Michael Mauti was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, while defensive end Deion Barnes was named co-Freshman of the Week for their efforts in Saturday's 34-7 win over Navy.

Mauti recorded 12 tackles and had two tackles for loss as Penn State's defense dominated against the Midshipmen. He has 33 tackles in three games, ranking third in the Big Ten.

The weekly award was the second of Mauti's career. He also won it in 2010 after a game against Northwestern.

Barnes had five tackles, a sack and forced a fumble to earn the first Big Ten award of his career. He shares it with Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
