Penn State's big football recruiting extravaganza for Saturday's game against Ohio State has paid immediate dividends.
Richie Anderson, the 6-foot, 182-pound running back from Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Md. and son of the former Penn State running back of the same name, Md., gave the Nittany Lions a verbal commitment following his official visit, several Internet sites reported on Sunday.
Anderson is the 12th member of the 2013 recruiting class, but he will be able to be counted against the 2012 scholarship numbers because he plans to enroll in January.
Originally verbally committed to Maryland, Anderson is considered an all-purpose back who also could line up as a slot receiver - he had nearly 1,400 yards combined rushing and receiving last year as the Patriots made the Maryland Class 3A state championship game.
Boston College, Rutgers, Temple, Wake Forest and East Carolina were other colleges that offered him a scholarship.
