John V. Cavrich

John V. Cavrich, 88, Hollidaysburg, died Tuesday evening at his residence.

He was born in Centerville, son of the late Nickola and Anna (Trdenic) Cavrich. He married Betsy Elliott on Aug. 24, 1956, in Hollidaysburg.

Surviving are his wife, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage; a daughter, Barb Sherry and husband, Bob, of Chest Springs; two sons: John D. and wife, Mary Jean, of Hollidaysburg and Joseph W. and wife, Connie, of Pittsburgh; three sisters: Helen Sansone of Hershey, Mary Acri of Harrisburg and Anita Thompson of Camp Hill; a brother, George A. of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren: Ashley and Caroline Swope and Victoria and Annie Cavrich.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Stanley N. and Joseph J., both of Harrisburg; a sister, Dorothy Lyter of Palmyra; and his stepmother, Mary Cavrich of Harrisburg.

John was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps in the Panama Canal Zone. He retired after 34 years of service with the Pennsylvania State Police and then worked for an additional 12 years as a Deputy Sheriff with the Office of the Blair County Sheriff.

John was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 57, Bedford, Deputy Sheriff's Association of Pennsylvania, life member of American Legion Post 516, Hollidaysburg, P.A.R.S.E., Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania and Ancient Gastronomical Order of Rattling Reptiles.

John enjoyed attending and watching Penn State Nittany Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers football games, taking family photographs and spending time with friends and family at the Harpster cottage and cabin in Spruce Creek.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., 422 N. Juniata Street, Hollidaysburg, where a public funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, by Father Clement G. Gardner, with interment to follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Hollidaysburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Nursing Hospice, Altoona, or the American Heart Association.
