John A. Carnevale, 83, Altoona, went to be with the Lord Sunday at Altoona Regional after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Anthony and Angeline (Lascoli) Carnevale. He married Joan Holland on Oct. 25, 1952, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Pamela K. Wertz and husband, retired Lt. Col. Michael Wertz, of Gettysburg and Anita Grimes (Norman Kough) and Beth Ann Carnevale and fiance, John McPhee, both of Altoona; six grandchildren: Capt. Anthony M. Wertz, U.S. Army Airborne, 2nd Lt. Evan R. Wertz, U.S. Army Airborne, Joshua C. Grimes, Andrea J. Settle, Ryan A. Caputo and Shannon A. Caputo; a brother, Ernest of Altoona; and two sisters: Theresa Reimer of Arvada, Colo., and Nancy Thiele of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gabriel; a sister, Mary Grace Moore; and a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Grimes.
John was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in Guam as a cryptographic technician with the 19th Communications Squadron. He retired in 1981 from the Van Zandt VA Medical Center with 30 years of service. After his retirement, he worked at Home Nursing Agency for 23 years.
John was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where he was an active volunteer, lector, usher and CCD teacher for many years. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the New York Yankees. He loved to read and spent his life reading and educating himself. He loved his grandchildren, "the lights of his life."
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Father Brian Saylor. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
