An armed man refused to leave his house for an involuntary commitment on Monday, provoking a 17-hour standoff that ended when officers raided the home, Altoona police said Tuesday.
The man, whose name has not been released, refused to leave his house on the 5500 block of Fifth Avenue, Patrolman Erik Stirk said. The standoff began around 2 p.m. Monday.
Police closed surrounding streets and contacted the state police Special Emergency Response Team, a heavily armed unit equipped to raid buildings.
Police attacked the house Tuesday morning and apprehended the gunman around 7 a.m., Stirk said.
He was taken to Altoona Regional for evaluation, police said in a news release.
