Francis G. "Bud" Barner Jr., 81, of 666 Park Ave., Tyrone, died Thursday.
He was born in Tyrone, son of the late Francis Glenmar Sr. and Dorothy Ellen (Calderwood) Barner. He married Beverley A. Hand on May 5, 1956.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Julie Marie Dillon (Don) of Tyrone; a son, Jeffrey L. (Brenda) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren: Caitlinn, Jenna and Olivia; and two sisters: Grace Brickley of Portage and Laura Jean Ellenberger of Enola.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Kruis.
Bud was a 1951 graduate of Tyrone High School and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He began working for the A&P Tea Co. in 1950 and was there until it closed. In August 1987 he was co-owner of the Tyrone IGA grocery store until he retired in July 1996.
Bud was a life member of the Hookies Fire Company, a life member of VFW Post 4559 and past commander from 1965-66, a life member of Tyrone Elks Lodge 212, a member of Tyrone American Legion 281, Bellwood Fraternal Order of Eagles, Tyrone Lodge 494 F&AM and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Altoona, and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police Bald Eagle Lodge 51.
His favorite pastimes were spending time with his granddaughters, Tyrone football and organizing bus trips to play the slots at casinos. He was known as the "Cookie Man" for supplying cookies for the first aid station at DelGrosso's Amusement Park, Tipton.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2103, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, the Rev. Norman E. Huff officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Tyrone Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Bud's memory to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
