Rick L. "Oakie" Oakes, 57, Fredericksburg, died unexpectedly Friday morning at his home.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of Bonnie (Blazevich) Hetrick and the late Joseph A. Oakes Jr.
Surviving are his stepmother, Joanne Oakes of Roaring Spring; five siblings: Patricia Weyandt of Claysburg, Suzanne Garber of Puzzletown, George Eckman of Roaring Spring, Marlene Stern of Claysburg and Michael Snyder; his companion, Donna L. Showalter of Fredericksburg; and many friends.
Rick was a 1973 graduate of Central High School. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, stationed most of his time in Germany. He was currently working at Appleton Papers Inc., Roaring Spring, where he had been employed since March 7, 1977.
Oakie loved the outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing and NASCAR and was also a big Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football fan.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, by Pastor David F. Banaszak.
