Plenty of upsets on first night of mat action

February 16, 2013
By Todd Irwin (tirwin@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

The bottom half of the 126-pound weight class of the District 6 Class AA Tournament is shredded, cut into pieces first by Tyrone's 15th-seeded Aleic Hunter and then by Moshannon Valley's seventh-seeded Bryce Bloom.

The only one on that side of the bracket that makes sense seed-wise is Mount Union's third-seeded Jake Boozel pinning his way to the semifinals.

Hunter pulled off the first upset in an upset-filled tournament Friday at the Altoona Fieldhouse by knocking off West Branch's second-seeded Abe Albright, 9-7, in the second round. And then Bloom took down Hunter right before the final buzzer to win, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

"That felt pretty good," Bloom said. "He knocked off Abe, which was pretty surprising, so it was a good win for me. I expected to make it this far, and I expect to keep going. That takedown was pretty close, and I did what I had to do. I knew I was going to get it."

"Bryce puts a lot of hard work into it, and it's paying off," Mo Valley coach Justin Fye said. "He was peaking about halfway through the season, and was turning a corner. I know it was a close match, but if you watched it, he was the aggressor the whole match. He was no-stop on offense. I'm not surprised where he's at."

Bloom was one of three Black Knights who advanced, joining top-seeded James Stodart at 195 and Jake Ludwig at 220. Bloom will face Boozel, who he's never wrestled, in the semis.

"He's a tough opponent," Bloom said, "but if I keep doing what I'm doing, I think I'll do pretty good."

"Once the seedings came out, and we got to see where he's at, we had a good feeling that if he wrestles the way he's capable of wrestling, he could easily make it to the finals," Fye said. "We talk about one step at a time."

Penn Cambria's seventh-seeded Seth McLendon also pulled off an upset of a West Branch wrestler, defeating second-seeded Buzzy Maines in the tiebreaker, 2-1.

"It was close," McLendon said. "Lot of hard work, I guess."

McLendon gets the third-seeded Ludwig, who earned a wild 15-10 win over United's Andrew Deitman in the quarters.

"He's a tough kid," McLendon said. "I just have to wear him down and work hard."

"McLendon is tough," Fye said. "He stays in good positions a lot. Jake is just going to have to push the pace and make him go six minutes. You've got wrestle like there's no tomorrow."

Penn Cambria's eighth-seeded Jon Wilkinson nearly earned the biggest upset of the day, taking Cambria Heights' top-seeded Aaron Gill into the overtime and then the tiebreaker in the 285-pound quarterfinals before Gill pulled out a 3-2 win.

Gill lived on the edge Friday as he was tied with Glendale's 17th-seeded Kody Ness, 1-1, in the third period of the second round before the Heights junior scored three unanswered points to win, 4-1.

"Actually, I think he was a little bit nervous," Heights coach Mike Eckenrode said. "He's still not wrestling the way he should be."

Gill is one of four Highlanders who advanced to today's noon semifinals. Joe Davis (120 pounds), Levi Niebauer (152) and Tyler Crawford (182) also reached the semis for Heights, which shared the team standings with with Blairsville heading into the night session, but is in second place by two points, 75-73, behind West Branch.

"I really would have liked to have Brad Thomas in there too," Eckenrode said, "but we'll see what happens tomorrow."

Mount Union and Penns Valley are tied for third with 72 points, and Huntingdo is in fifth by two points, 68-66, over Blairsville.

Huntingdon also advanced four wrestlers in Collin Glorioso (106), Devon Green (126), Nathan Russell (132) and Eric Lynn (145).

"I think we did all right," Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. "[In the quarterfinals], we had some tough matches. We won a lot of them early, and then we didn't do so well to end it. That's the way it goes.

Fifteen area wrestlers advanced to the quarters, including Central's Kale Burket (113) and Nick Hoenstine (138), Bellwood-Antis' Nick Torsell (160) and Keith Shawley (285), Claysburg-Kimmel's Josh Brown (113), Tyrone's Jason Schopp (120) and Central Cambria's Tom Opdenhoff (120).

Five No. 3 seeds lost on the first day, with the sixth-seeded Russell beating Juniata's Adam Barrick, 2-0, with a last-second reversal, the sixth-seeded Niebauer beating Huntingdon's Logan Fisher, 5-0, and the sixth-seeded Torsell beating Juniata's Derek Beitz, 3-2. West Branch's Dustin Deliman (106) and United's Charles Hropovich (182) also had upsets of third seeds.

"When it comes to districts, anything can happen," Fye said. "It's not even about Cinderellas. It's about peaking at the right time. It's like a whole new season when districts start."

"No matter what you get seeded, you still have to wrestle the match," B-A coach Ron Wilson said. "They don't give the awards for the seeds. This is wrestling, and on any given day, anybody can win."
