From Mirror staff reports

TIPTON - A Monday morning domestic violence incident led to the temporary closing of the Tipton post office.

Hollidaysburg state police responded to a domestic violence incident about 7:40 a.m. in Tipton between a 25-year-old Tyrone man and a 36-year-old Tyrone woman.

The man took off in a vehicle belonging to the woman and drove around Tipton, then drove into the Tipton post office, causing severe damage to the building, police said.

The lobby of the Tipton post office at 663 Forest St. was damaged Monday morning when a man drove a car into the building.

No one inside the post office was injured, but the facility was closed because it is considered unsafe at the present time, said Tad Kelley, USPS spokesman.

Kelley said he did not have an estimate of damage and said he doesn't know how long it will be before the post office is repaired and reopens. Postal customers who have a mailbox inside will be able to pick up their mail at the Tyrone post office.

After the crash, the man fled on foot but was apprehended in the woods along the nearby railroad tracks, police said.

Police said the man's identity is not being released yet because he has not been officially charged. He will be charged with simple assault, criminal mischief, unauthorized use of an automobile, driving under the influence and other traffic violations, police said.

The man, who is currently on state parole, had his parole revoked and was lodged in the Blair County Prison pending formal arraignment, police said.
