The Rev. A.M. "Del" Gordon Jr., 85, Martinsburg, went home to be the Lord Tuesday evening at Select Specialty Hospital, Johnstown, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Adelbert M. Sr. and Pat (Hansen) Gordon. He married Minerva Diaz on June 6, 1953, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Akron, Ohio.
Surviving are his beloved wife of almost 60 years; two sons: A.M. "Del" III of Ebensburg and Victor and wife, Julia, of Rockford, Ill.; two daughters: Rebecca Gordon and husband, David Byrd, of Naperville, Ill., and Kimberly of Roaring Spring; two granddaughters: Michaela Byrd and Elena Byrd; and a brother, Bruce and wife, Barbara, of Highland, Md.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack.
The Rev. Gordon was a 1952 graduate of Bluffton (Ohio) College and then a graduate of United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where subsequently he was ordained into the ministry in 1956 at Albright Evangelical United Brethren Church, Washington, D.C.
He served in the ministry for a total of 38 years, coming to Hickory Bottom United Church of Christ charge in 1964. The Hickory Bottom charge consisted of three churches: St. John's UCC, Loysburg, Mount Pleasant UCC, rural Martinsburg, and St. John's UCC, East Sharpsburg, rural Roaring Spring. Previous to that, he had served pastorates at the Byrnesville and Wellsville parish in York County and at Mount Troy, Pittsburgh.
After his retirement, the Rev. Gordon continued to serve pastorates on an interim basis at Alexandria UCC, Huntingdon County, Martinsburg Church of God, Hollidaysburg Church of God and St. John's UCC, Martinsburg.
In addition to his ministerial duties, Del taught school in York and Adams counties and, after coming to the Hickory Bottom charge, was also a teacher of driver education and safety at Bedford Area High School, from which he also retired after 29 years of service. He was a member of Cuyahoga Falls Lodge 735, F&AM, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Loysburg United Church of Christ and 1 until the 2 p.m. funeral service Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Martinsburg Church of God, Dr. Lew Button officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be given to the Martinsburg Church of God Memorial Fund.
