Fred Harry Simm, 89, Altoona, died Sunday at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Edward and Edith (Drenning) Simm. He was twice married, first to Jean Conrad in June 1945, and she preceded him in death in 1979. He then married Eleanor Jacobs in May 1980.
Surviving are his wife; three children: Sharon (Tim) Seymore and Sandra Detwiler, both of Altoona, and Edward (Judith) of Elkton, Md.; a stepson, Rick (Michele) Dean; seven grandchildren: Brendt, Brandeis, Misty, Susan, Doug, Richard and Rebekah; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathy Truesdale of Hollidaysburg.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Edward Detwiler.
Fred was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII and attaining the rank of sergeant. He served in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, Normandy and Northern France campaigns. He retired in 1989 from the Stevens Co. as sales manager after 44 years of service.
Fred was a member of First Baptist Church, Altoona, where he was a trustee and deacon and ran the sound system, and a member of The Gideons. He enjoyed motorcycling, traveling, driving, fishing trips, especially to Canada, and camping.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., Pastor Tyler Pepper officiating. Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.
