Donald J. "Grappy" Gregg, 65, Cresson, died Tuesday in Ebensburg as the result of a tri-axle truck accident.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Leroy and Bertha (McGuire) Gregg. He married Joan F. Greevey on Sept. 25, 1971.
Surviving are his wife; two children: Dawn Marie (Randy) Repko and Donald "Buddy" Jr. (Angela), both of Cresson; five grandchildren: Kayla, Isaac and Luke Repko and Jacob and Olivia Gregg; and two brothers: Howard L. (Sherry) of State College and George (Paulette) of Cresson.
Don was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with the rank of chief warrant officer 2, having served in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm and having received three Purple Hearts. He received the Outstanding Marine of the Year in 1984 from Mountain Cities Marine Corps League Detachment 301 in Altoona. He was a self-employed truck driver with Gregg Bros. Trucking, Cresson.
Don was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson, Gallitzin American Legion and Sankertown VFW. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Jaffa Shrine and was captain of the Jaffa Ushers. He also belonged to the Colver & Indiana Railroad Club and was a Civil War and Cresson history buff. He loved to watch Pittsburgh Pirates and Altoona Curve baseball.
He was a dedicated grandfather and loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin, where the Legion of Mary will recite the rosary followed by a vigil service on Friday afternoon.
A funeral Mass will be concelebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson, the Very Rev. John Byrnes and the Rev. Malachi VanTassell as celebrants. Committal will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Cresson. Military rites will be accorded by Ebensburg Marine Center and local military organizations.
The family suggests that donations be made to Sacred Heart Sisters, 1872 Munster Road, Portage, PA 15946, in Don's memory.
