Erma Mae Glass, 86, Orrtanna, formerly of Downingtown, entered into God's eternal care Wednesday at Chambersburg Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Altoona, the only daughter of the late Harry and Viola (Nearhoof) Deitz. For 50 years, she was the loving and caring wife of the late Charles E. Glass, who passed away in 1998.
Surviving are four children: Gregory C. (Cynthia) of Pittsburgh, Marlene L. Hammer of Washington, D.C., Joyce Y. Wright (Gerry) of Louisville, Ky., and Douglas E. (Lynda) of Orrtanna; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Deitz (Ardith) of Chelmsford, Mass.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers: Carl, Meryl, Russell, John and Harry Deitz Jr.
Erma was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School and retired from Downingtown National Bank. She was a member of Downingtown United Methodist Church and a volunteer at the Lord's Pantry for a number of years. Her life achievement was raising her family, who loved her with all of their hearts.
Erma enjoyed life and was known for her sense of humor. Her deep appreciation for music helped cultivate her children's musical interests. An avid reader, she also loved word and jigsaw puzzles, needlework and crafts. She had an intense love of animals and was rarely without a family dog. Her special joy was watching her grandchildren grow and mature into loving adults and parents.
Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Downingtown United Methodist Church, 751 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, Pastor William Kauffman officiating. Interment will follow in Philadelphia Memorial Park.
