Eugene R. "Gene" Capone, 70, Altoona, died early Monday morning at his residence surrounded by his family after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Costantino and Cristina (Tupone) Capone. He married Marilyn A. Decker on Aug. 29, 1970, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; two children: Aaron E. of Pittsburgh and Cristina L. "Cece" of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two siblings: Lilia Sprankle of Altoona and Alberto of Lancaster, Calif.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Domenick, Arturo and Dino.
Gene was a 1962 graduate of Highland Hall. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Vietnam War era. He retired in 2007 as a manager at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, State College, and previously had worked at Meyer Jonasson for 25 years.
Gene was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. He served as a board member of Easter Seals, Big Brothers Big Sisters and AMBUCS. He cherished time with his family and was an avid reader and lover of music and art. He enjoyed giving tours of the Cathedral.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
