Irene M. Sylvester, 88, Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Duncansville, died Friday evening at Garvey Manor. She was born in Cresson, daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Cecelia M. (Gailey) Gallagher. She married James C. Sylvester, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters: Margaret Stitt (Gary) of Altoona and Janet Metz (Mark) of Hollidaysburg; a son, Stephen (Sharon) of Altoona; four grandchildren: Justin, Nicholas, Amy and Michael (Natasha); a great-granddaughter, Camryn; a sister, Rita Gall of Manchester; and two brothers: Paul of York and Clarence "Sonny" of York Haven.
She was preceded in death by two sons: James E. and John; and three sisters: Mary, Theresa and Alice.
Irene was a Cresson High School graduate. She formerly worked at Tritex and was a housekeeper and caregiver for many years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.
She enjoyed playing bingo, reading and doing puzzles, and she had a "green thumb" for gardening.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, where friends will be received for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
