BOWIE, Md. - Curve right-hander Adrian Sampson entered his first start in July looking to put behind a disappointing month of June, in which he posted a 4.91 ERA in five starts.
Wednesday night, Sampson went six innings and allowed just one run, despite giving up eight hits, and walked none as the Curve beat Bowie at Prince George's Stadium, 5-1, to snap a five-game losing streak.
Sampson (6-5) tied his career worst of 11 hits allowed and gave up a season-high seven runs in his last outing on June 27, a loss against Binghamton.
His 2.83 ERA ranks fourth in the Eastern League, and he has gone five innings or more in 10 of his last 11 starts. The exception was June 11 against Portland when he went three innings in a suspended game. Sampson has recorded 75 strikeouts, placing him sixth in the league.
After having fallen behind five games in a row, the Curve jumped out in front first as leadoff hitter Alen Hanson opened the game with a home run. Matt Curry hit another one later in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
Tonight: Altoona at Bowie, 6:35 p.m.
Pitchers: Curve LHP Zack Dodson (2-4, 4.43) vs. Baysox LHP Jake Pettit (4-6, 6.72)
Hanson's first-inning leadoff blast was his second of the year, his last one coming May 1 against Erie. It's the third time the team has started a game with a homer.
The next inning, the Curve added another pair of runs, thanks to a triple by Willy Garcia that scored Keon Broxton. Andy Vasquez's RBI groundout brought home Garcia for a four-run cushion.
Broxton's night, though, was cut short. Baysox reliever Mychal Givens hit him in the knee and he had trouble getting up before getting replaced by Justin Howard.
David Adams did manage to drive in Kyeong Kang for the Baysox on a single, but that's as close as they got.
Bowie starter Matt Bischoff (2-3) was chased early, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on four hits.
