30 charged in Johnstown drug sweep

July 31, 2014
The Altoona Mirror

HARRISBURG - Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane today announced charges against 30 suspected drug dealers following a street-level sweep in Johnstown.

The charges are the culmination of a nine-month cooperative investigation between the Office of Attorney General, Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan's office, the Cambria County Violent Drug Activity Task Force and other local law enforcement officers.

Agents and local police made a series of undercover purchases and controlled buys of heroin, crack cocaine and prescription pills. Information gathered from street-level sweeps, including sources of supply, is used to target mid- to upper-level drug dealers by the Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI) agents and drug prosecutors.

This investigation was funded by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, which is an aggressive impact task force focused on violent drug offenders in the City of Johnstown and surrounding communities.

Agents said that the ongoing investigation, which began in October 2013, has already identified several drug organizations from Pittsburgh, New York and New Jersey. The individuals charged and arrested today are low and mid-level dealers and drug users associated with some of those networks.

The Office of Attorney General recently unveiled a new initiative to fight the scourge of illegal drugs in communities across the Commonwealth. Individuals who believe they have witnessed a drug deal in their neighborhood or suspect illegal drug activity wehre they live or work can send an anonymous tip to the Office of Attorney General by texting PADRUGS + YOUR TIP to 847411. Tips can also be submitted electronically here.
