Altoona library sets programs

Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., has announced its July activities. Most programs require registration by calling 814-946-0417. For more information, visit www.altoonalibrary.org.

n In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library is hosting a teen gaming club from

3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different.

n Chess Club is held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Meet at the front tables near the Adult Circulation desk. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.

n Sample Food through the Ages at 6 p.m. July 2. Experience a historical presentation on the food topic for the month, “Potato Chips.” Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program. Registration and a $3 fee is required.

n A Knit-In will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

July 6. Teachers canhelp get you started. Beginners bring size 8 needles, and some light colored yarn. This is a free adult program. No registration required.

n Become a dementia friend in your community at 1 p.m. July 8. The Dementia Friends Project is a community-focused program that increases awareness and understanding of dementia. This global organization aims to educate caregivers and community members to help provide a safe and inclusive environment for those living with dementia. Those who participate will receive the Dementia Friends packet including a Dementia Friends certificate and how to find resources in your community.

n Celebrate Dungeons and Dragons’ 50th Anniversary with these library programs! Make your own DnD Inititave Tracker at 6 p.m. July 9 (ages 18+). Create DnD Display Potions at 2:30 p.m. July 25 (ages 12-18). Make your own DnD Dice Tower at

6 p.m. July 30 (ages 18+). All materials will be provided.

n The Friends of the Library will meet at 10 a.m. July 20 to discuss “Beartown” by Fredrik Bachman. RSVP to

n Sensory Storytime, held on July 10 and 24, is an inclusive program for patrons who are on the autism spectrum or have sensory-related needs. Sensory Storytime for ages 12-112 is at 10 a.m.. Sensory Storytime for ages 5-12 is at 11 a.m.

n Personalized Lip Balm Making will be held at

2:30 p.m. July 11. All materials will be provided. Program is for patrons ages 12-18.

n Looking to take up a new summer craft? Then come to the library at

2:30 p.m. July 18 and learn to reuse and upcycle. Make your own paint brushes from branches and foliage, and paint to your heart’s content. This program is for patrons ages 12-18.

n Come enjoy an afternoon of crafting at 1 p.m. July 20. We will be making a seashell dish to hold jewelry or other small trinkets. Program is for adult patrons and the cost is $3.

n Bookmark Bunch, to be held at noon July 22, is an interactive book club for students ages 7 and older. July’s theme is “Fun in the Sun.” Select a book that takes place on a sunny day or in the summer. Choose from fiction or nonfiction and in any format.

n The library is partnering with the Clay Cup at

5:30 p.m. July 23 to paint ceramics at the library. The cost of the program is $15 and must be paid by July 12 in order to reserve materials. First come first serve for a planter or mug. This program is for adult patrons.

n Participants will be creating pinecone flowers on canvas at 1 p.m. July 27 that can be displayed in your home yearround. This is a free program for adult patrons.

n Families of young children are invited to check out the library’s free educational story time programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together. Developmentally appropriate and enjoyable programs for children ages 1-6 are offered weekly. Call the library to register.

n The library also offers a Booktender service as well as personalized assistance getting started with genealogy research. For a 30-minute Genealogy 1-on-1 appointment, call the library.

SummerQuest2024

The library is offering the following programs as part of its summer reading program. Register by calling 814-946-0417, ext. 123.

Marvelous Mondays — Ages 5-12 can join the team of Dewey Detectives at 1 p.m. every Monday in an adventure through the world of nonfiction. Using the power of books, we’ll track down a mysterious character.

Terrific Tuesdays — Ages 5-12 can join Miss Becca at 1 p.m. every Tuesday for an exciting adventure through some of the most beloved genres of fiction.

Wee Ones Wednesdays — At 10 a.m. Wednesdays, ages 4 and younger participate in special activities geared toward children and their caregivers.

Thrilling Thursdays — Ages 5-12 can join Miss Tori at 1 p.m. every Thursday for a thrilling adventure, then leave feeling inspired to find the next one.

Fantastic Fridays — Ages 5-12 can join special guests at 10:30 a.m. Fridays in the Youth Room with some programs. July 19 will be Macro Collecting with the Blair County Conservation District, and July 26 will be Adventures in Animal Rescue with Mending Hearts.

Silvers-Screen Saturdays — Free family-friendly matinees will be shown at

1 p.m. every Saturday during SummerQuest. No registration is necessary. Movies are “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” July 6; “Puss in Boots,”

July 13; “Jumanji,” July 20; and “Mulan,” July 27.
