VFW Thanksgiving food drive underway

DUNCANSVILLE — Through Oct. 31, VFW Post 8724 of Duncansville, in honor of Larry Wertz, is holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive benefiting the Spc. Chad A. Edmundson Memorial Foundation Inc.

Items needed include canned fruits and vegetables, stuffing mix, canned cranberries, macaroni and cheese and any nonperishable item

Drop-off locations include Holland Brothers Meats, 16627 Dunnings Highway, Duncansville; Allegheny Club, 317 Front St., Hollidaysburg; Duncansville VFW Post 8724, 1665 Newry Lane, Duncansville; and Mile Level Physical Therapy locations in Roaring Spring, Northern Cambria, Huntington, Claysburg, Altoona and Bedford.

Library plans Paint and Sip event, more

PORTAGE — The Portage Public Library will host a Paint and Sip event at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Crimson Room of the Parkway Restaurant.

Ballroom dance is Nov. 11 in Indiana

INDIANA, Pa. — The Indiana Ballroom Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Elks Lodge. Enjoy the music of Murphys Big Little Band.

PSU-Altoona to present three plays

Three one-act plays will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 and 8 in the Wolf Kuhn Theatre of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at Penn State Altoona.

“Fun,” by Howard Korder, and “Lives of the Great Waitresses,” by Nina Shengold, are directed by Leila McCrumb.

“Hootie and the Good Pot” is written and directed by Aaron James with Adria (Jay) Schmidt serving as assistant director.

Throughout these productions, casts and crews explore angst, coming of age and urban decay, all themes prevalent in the everyday lives of Pennsylvanians living in the Rust Belt.

These performances are free and open to the public through support of the Kjell Meling Arts for All Initiative.

Camp lottery calendars available

TYRONE — Camp Anderson’s 2025 Lottery Calendar fundraiser is underway. Help support the camp and get 365 chances to win. The winning number each day is based on the evening drawing of the Pennsylvania Lottery Pick 3. Payouts are mailed on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Only 1,000 calendars will be sold. The Camp Anderson Corporation is a nonprofit corporation that operates the camp that served as a Boy Scout Camp from 1926 until 2016, when it was bought from the Boy Scouts of America so it could continue to be enjoyed by the community.

Holliday Chapter hears from state regent

The Adam Holliday Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Oct. 6 at The Blairmont Country Club for the South Central District Meeting.

Guest speaker was PSSDAR State Regent Marguerite Fritsch.

Awards presented by SC District Director Edyth Sarnoff to the chapter were as follows: Eastern Division First Place for Outstanding Electronic Media Coverage, Eastern Division DAR Project Patriot Committee Outstanding Military Support to Brooke Army Medical Center USO Warrior and Family Support Center, Outstanding Service of DAR to Library Outreach Committee, Conservation Committee, Fort Roberdeau Tree Giveaway, and Red Ribbon for Chapter Achievement Awards.

Individual awards went to Eastern Division Vice Chair Dani Felty, Chapter Regent Michelle Shank, and Chapter Librarian H. Jean Sinal for Outstanding Service to the Library Outreach Committee.

On Oct. 2, a rededication ceremony was held of the 1938 DAR Bronze Plaque honoring Chapter Patriot Adam Holliday at the H.L. Green Building on The Diamond in Hollidaysburg, the site of Holliday’s first log cabin. A reception followed at the Mayfield in the Capitol Hotel.

The chapter said it is very grateful to be recognized by U.S. Rep. John Joyce, M.D., who included Constitution Week and the Adam Holliday Chapter in his Official Congressional Record Remarks read on the House Floor in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 17.

“Service to America” donations were monetary funds for Hurricane Helene Relief Fund.

DAR genealogy help is available to prove lineal descent from a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or gave aid to American Colonists during the Revolution for DAR eligibility for any woman 18 years of age.
