Penn State workers avert strike

From Mirror staff reports

Penn State technical service employees will not be going on strike following the announcement that union representatives and the university came to an agreement on a four-year contract.

Teamsters Local 8 posted Friday on its Facebook page that a tentative deal had been struck with Penn State on behalf of more than 2,700 workers in custodial, emergency medical response, food and housing departments, among others. The deal reportedly includes a 20% wage increase over the course of the agreement.

Almost 1,900 members voted Wednesday in favor of going on strike if a deal wasn’t struck by the Sunday, June 30, deadline. The move was intended to put pressure on the university administration to agree to a contract with union representatives, which was a successful strategy, according to the Facebook post.

The union said more information on the agreement would be shared during ratification meetings.
