BELLWOOD — A long-time supporter of The Door will be honored during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Door’s basketball court, which was recently repaved, will be dedicated in honor of Bellwood native Edward S. Engle III.

Engle, who unexpectedly passed away two years ago, was employed as principal/director of business development and certified building inspector at Arrow Land Solutions LLC, Altoona, and was a passionate supporter of The Door.

The company donated more than $4,500 for the repavement project, said CEO Brenda Wiedman.

“We didn’t charge for labor. Vince Shank Landscaping was the contractor, Crystal Mitchell did the excavating and painting,” Wiedman said.

“Ed was a business partner of mine. He was well respected and so well liked by clients and all of us. He was a supporter, a team leader. He was a genuine, kind, loyal man and he loved his community,” Wiedman said. “Every year we would pick someone to contribute to and he always picked The Door. He has done so much to help in the community. He wanted to give back to help them out.”

Danielle Farrell, Engle’s daughter, said her father appreciated what The Door does for kids — offering them a crucial sense of belonging and boosting their confidence and overall well-being.

“Part of me wonders if he wished something like that had been around when he was growing up. After his passing, we found that dad consistently donated to The Door, as well as other charities focused on helping children in need,” Farrell said.

“The dedication of the basketball court to my dad means the world to me and the rest of his family and friends. It’s a beautiful tribute to the man he was– a kind, generous, sports-loving man who always saw the best in people. His favorite piece of advice was always, ‘work hard, play harder,’ and that pretty much sums up how he lived. He would no doubt be humbly honored by this dedication,” Farrell said.
