Great Commission Schools is presenting “Fiddler on the Roof” at 7 p.m. today, April 5, at the Mishler Theatre. The first show was Friday. Tickets can be purchased for $12 at the Mishler box office or online at mishlertheatre.org.

“Fiddler on the Roof” is a beloved musical set in the small Jewish village of Anatevka in early 20th-century Russia. It follows Tevye, a humble dairyman, who struggles to uphold his Jewish traditions while his older daughters seek to marry for love, challenging the customs he holds dear.

As Tevye grapples with his daughters’ choices — one marrying a poor tailor instead of a wealthy match, another wedding a radical idealist and a third defying religious boundaries — he must reconcile his love for them with his deep-seated beliefs. Meanwhile, the looming presence of antisemitic persecution threatens the entire community, forcing them to confront an uncertain future.

“‘Fiddler’ was not on our short list. It wasn’t even on our long list. We weren’t considering anything like it,” said Director Angela Hildebrand. “After months of meetings and several other shows considered, nothing felt right. Then somehow we landed on ‘Fiddler on the Roof.'”

Hildebrand said they knew “Fiddler on the Roof” was the right choice after all when they made their decision. She added that she is proud of her students for stepping up to the challenge, particularly since she has personally loved the production since she was younger.
