Dodgers must wait for pitching help

CHICAGO — Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell is going to stop throwing for a couple days after he felt some discomfort when he played catch Tuesday.
Snell is on the 15-day injured list because of shoulder inflammation. The two-time Cy Young Award winner signed a $182 million, five-year contract in November.
“Blake, as he was playing catch, just didn’t feel great,” manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday night before a game against the Chicago Cubs. “So right now we’re going to slow play the throwing and probably get it looked at again when we get back home.”
The 32-year-old Snell is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in two starts this season. It was unclear when the pitcher reported the issue; Roberts said before Tuesday’s 11-10 loss to the Cubs that Snell had played catch and “it went well.”
Roberts said Wednesday that he isn’t concerned at this point.
O’s woes
WASHINGTON — Baltimore Orioles right-hander Grayson Rodriguez, who has been rehabbing from elbow inflammation, has a strained lat muscle and is a “couple of weeks” from resuming his throwing program, manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday.
Rodriguez started the season on the injured list because of the elbow issue, and a bullpen session scheduled for last week was canceled when he developed a sore shoulder. A second medical opinion sought after an MRI revealed the mild lat strain, Hyde said.
It’s a familiar injury for the 25-year-old Rodriguez. In 2022 while in the minors, Rodriguez missed three months with a lat strain, which delayed his major league debut until April 2023.
In 2024, he was placed on the IL with a lat strain in August, finishing with 20 starts. He has made only 43 starts in two seasons, going 20-8 with a 4.11 ERA.
Cubs get help
CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have added infielder Nicky Lopez and reliever Drew Pomeranz as part of a flurry of moves. Lopez signed a one-year contract and Pomeranz was placed on the roster two days after he was acquired in a trade with Seattle.
It was announced that Pomeranz would report to Triple-A Iowa after the deal, but he watched Tuesday night’s 11-10 victory over the Dodgers at Wrigley Field.
Infielder Gage Workman was designated for assignment, and right-hander Gavin Hollowell was optioned to Iowa. The NL Central leaders also transferred left-hander Justin Steele to the 60-day injured list.
Here they come
NEW YORK — New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and second baseman Jeff McNeil could be activated when the team starts a road trip Friday at Washington.
Alvarez fractured the hamate bone in his left hand during batting practice on March 8 and had surgery two days later. McNeil strained his right oblique during a spring training game on March 10.
Alvarez began a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment on April 9 and McNeil started one two days later. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says “If they get through today with no issues, we expect them to be active on Friday.”
The Mets are currently on a seven-game winning streak after a three-game sweep of the Phillies.
All-Star hurting
The Texas Rangers put All-Star slugging shortstop Corey Seager on the 10-day injured list with a grade 1 right hamstring injury.
Seager suffered the injury Tuesday night after getting a hit against the Athletics. He pulled up lame at first base after the single.
The Rangers called up infielder Nick Ahmed to take Seager’s place on the roster.
Seager is currently batting .286 with four homers and six RBIs for the 14-9 Rangers.
