Hoenstine honored

LORETTO — Jeff Hoenstine was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday for his work in the Saint Francis football team’s win this past weekend at Delaware State.

Teammate Markell Holman also added an NEC Prime Performer selection.

Hoenstine, a Central graduate, went 10-of-18 for 117 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Red Flash’s 28-17 comeback victory.

He added three rushes for 25 yards. Hoenstine’s one-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Thomson with 5:38 remaining in the game ignited a 22-point output in the fourth quarter.

The redshirt freshman is now 2-1 as a starter and 2-0 in games he finishes — he left in the fourth quarter of Saint Francis’ loss at home to Central Connecticut State with an injury.

So far this season, Hoenstine has a 59-percent completion percentage with 424 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and adds 64 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Holman rushed 22 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over Delaware State. He recorded 143 of his rushing yards during Saint Francis’ 22-point fourth quarter. His rushing yards were the most in a game since Marcus Bagley’s 220 on Sept. 17, 2016. Holman now ranks fifth in the NEC with 336 rushing yards this season.

The award is Hoenstine’s second of the season. Holman’s Prime Performer honor was the first of his career and he became the eighth different Red Flash player to win it this season.

Saint Francis is home to face Duquesne on Saturday for a noon kickoff. The game is also availableon ESPN-Plus.
