For starters, Penn State needs to come out swinging

It’s been the biggest problem of James Franklin’s 10-year tenure, something he’s been consistently unable to solve.

Penn State’s offense rarely comes out firing on all cylinders, opting instead to feel out the opponent and play rather lackadaisically for the first quarter and sometimes the entire first half.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that’s what I’ve been least impressed with so far.

The Lions didn’t score in the first quarter of the opener at West Virginia. It didn’t matter since they put a 20 spot on the board in the second quarter and won easily.

Penn State trailed Bowling Green 10-7 after one quarter and 24-20 at the half.

The Kent State game was borderline meaningless in my view, so nothing should be overanalyzed. That said, the Lions scored just seven points in the first quarter of that laugher.

Tennessee scored 37 in the first quarter against Kent State.

Look, we’ve known for years how all this goes. The PSU coaches take a long time to make adjustments, and usually do a great job of it at halftime.

My beef, as it’s always been, is: Why isn’t the team better prepared and more aggressive right from the get go?

Now that the competition is getting better in Big Ten play, it’s imperative that Franklin and his staff figure out a way to correct this long-standing problem.

As for what I’ve been most impressed by, that one’s pretty easy.

Tight end Tyler Warren has been outstanding. He leads the team with 16 catches for 226 yards and two TDs, and he’s clearly Drew Allar’s No. 1 target.

It’s always terrific when a quarterback has an excellent tight end. And we can heap all sorts of superlatives on Warren.

The nitpicking downside to that is the fact that wide receiver is still a concern. So, Warren bears a heavy burden to keep up his enormous production.

Can he do that in the Big Ten, where every defensive coordinator is going to bend over backwards trying to slow him down?

That remains to be seen.

If Warren can continue this, then the concerns at wide receiver won’t matter as much.

But if Warren does get taken away, the receivers are going to have to pick up a lot of slack.
