UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State took care of business as well as it could, pushing a 28-0 halftime advantage into a 56-0 shutout win over Kent State on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

The Nittany Lions set a single-game record for total offense in the contest with 718 yards, breaking the record of 711 yards set in 1926 against Susquehanna. The Lions also had 40 first downs, which beat the record of 38 set in 1962 against West Virginia.

It was especially a day to remember for quarterback Drew Allar, who was maybe as efficient as he’s ever been in a Nittany Lion uniform. Allar finished the day going 17 of 21 passing for 309 yards and three touchdowns. Most of that damage was done in the first half.

Kent State starting quarterback Devin Kargman was injured in the game’s opening series and left the field on a cart. JD Sherrod and Tommy Ulatowski split QB duties for the rest of the game, but neither were able to muster much of anything.

The PSU defense may have been equally as impressive as the offense. The defense held the Golden Flashes to just 67 total yards of offense. Kent State went 2 for 13 passing for just 18 yards.

The Lions (3-0) start Big Ten play in a night game against Illinois next week. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m., and NBC will televise.

Kent State (0-4) will start play in the Middle Atlantic Conference next Saturday with a home game against Eastern Michigan.

The Mirror will have full coverage in Monday’s edition.
