Lady Lions fall on road to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Penn State women’s basketball team suffered a 69-63 loss to Northwestern on the road on Sunday.
Despite a trio of Penn State players in double figure scoring, as well as five lead changes and six tie scores, PSU could not overcome the deficit down the stretch.
The Lady Lions fell to 10-14, 1-12 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern improved to 8-14 overall, 1-10 Big Ten.
Freshman Talayaha Walker led the Lady Lions in scoring with 14 points, redshirt-sophomore Gracie Merkle notched her 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards, and graduate Gabby Elliott scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Lady Lions outrebounded the Wildcats 46-31 in the game.

SFU women hold off rally
LORETTO — Saint Francis’ Airah Lavy scored a team-high 18 points in a 63-58 victory over Chicago State Saturday afternoon to move the team’s home-game winning streak to four.
Lavy hit double-digit points for the seventh time this season and knocked down five 3-pointers for the third time as well. The freshman forward went 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Yanessa Boyd was the second-leading scorer with eight points, including four free throws made in the final 26 seconds. The sophomore guard secured the defensive rebound after a missed Chicago State 3-pointer that led to her two free throws to clinch the victory. She also led the squad in rebounds with six.
The Red Flash moved to 7-3 for the fifth time in team history. The squad is a half game above Stonehill (6-3) for the second seed going into this week’s game on Thursday.

PSU Altoona downed
ERIE — The Penn State Altoona women’s basketball team returned to the road on Saturday to take on Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend, who dealt the Lions a 77-61 loss in the Junker Center.
Behrend (16-5, 12-0 AMCC) came out strong, putting 31 points on the board in the opening quarter en route to a 50-31 halftime lead. Penn State Altoona (10-11, 7-5 AMCC) tightened things up on defense in the second half, when it held Behrend to 27 points across the final two quarters, but the Lions were unable to dig out of their hole.
Avana Sayles posted her seventh double-double of the season for Penn State Altoona, leading all players in the game with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Jess Burns added 13 points, and Raniyah Green scored 10 points.
Skylar McCall chipped in six points off the bench. Madison Rusnica had team bests with six assists and two steals.
Behrend got 18 points from Rachel Majewski.
